EDITORS’ NOTES
The Complete Led Zeppelin collects the eight studio albums the foursome released between 1969-79, plus the posthumous ninth and final studio album Coda, released in 1982, after the death of drummer John Bonham. This is the core of ‘70s classic rock that travels far beyond the definition. While Led Zeppelin were clearly among the early progenitors of ‘Heavy Metal,’ back when it was considered to be loud, blues-based music, they hardly stayed in one place long enough to be defined as anything other than Led Zeppelin. They mastered hard rock with their lead-off track “Good Times, Bad Times” and nailed British folk on III and “The Battle Of Evermore.” IV became their centerpiece, every song a classic, with “Stairway to Heaven” serving as their national anthem. Houses of the Holy and Presence emphasized their ability to groove, while their double-album Physical Graffiti was the prototypical sprawling double album that all major rock artists tried once. In Through the Out Door explored synthesizers and featured everything from epic Zeppelin to old school rock ’n’ roll and the heartbreaking “All My Love.”

“One day a great horde of master tapes were discovered on a deserted island of my dreams. There seemed to be a giant Black-Backed Gull sitting on a Driftwood log, speaking telephathic to me. I stared into it’s eye and heard its voice inside me say,
‘Take this Buried Treasure and spend 7 years preserving the marvellous history of your work which you have forgotten you even created. And don’t forget that it is not only you who have created this work, you are a Gaelic Bardic Poet in the Service of Her Majesty The Queen of Heaven‘.
I woke to find the postman had delivered a letter to me which said that a truck was arriving with 700 Master Analog Tapes, dated from 1970 onwards, which had been in storage for over 35 years. They duly arrived and now they are ‘Preserved’ as The Great Gull commanded.
Rod Callan, my pal on the road, doing Sound Sculpture, and also my co-producer on many a fine recording, he catalogued the ‘horde’ then found FX, the Premier London Tape Transfer Company. Thanks Rod.
Then the master engineer at FX, Kevin Vanbergen, slowly transferred the Analog tapes to Digital, using old Reel to Reel Tape Recorders, on which the Buried Treasures had been originally recorded.
The results are what is called Digital ‘Pro-Tools’.
I also had acquired others Master Tapes, Marianne Faithful’s original masters of her Sixties debut work, and the many bands that Andrew Oldham had recorded for his Sixties IMMEDIATE LABEL. When I gave Marianne her little tapes she was mighty pleased to have such an artefact. When I told Andrew he was delighted and I sent him his early masters. Andrew than sent me some other masters of mine from the Essence to Essence Sessions he and I recorded back in 1972. Marvellous and more unknown Donovan from Andrew too!
The Digital Transfers were then archived diligently by my dear friend Josep Umbria in his Majorca Studio Calma Estudis, over a period of 5 years.
The result is THE DONOVAN AUDIO & VIDEO ARCHIVE. And it is from this ‘horde’ that my family and I will begin to present for you to own.
It is BURIED TREASURES SERIES, and it is difficult to know where to begin.
Well, as in the ALICE books of Lewis Carroll, it is best to begin at the beginning and go through to the end.
For the recordings of Unknown Me have continued, as I can’t stop writing songs and recording them.
We at the Family Company of DONOVAN DISCS, AUDIO, FILMWORKS & PRINT present the first issue of BURIED TREASURES SERIES.

'Universal Soldier' is a song written and recorded by Canadian singer-songwriterBuffy Sainte-Marie. The song was originally released on Sainte-Marie's debut album It's My Way! in 1964. 'Universal Soldier' was not a popular hit at the time of its release, but it did garner attention within the contemporary folk music community. It became a hit a year later when Donovan covered it. Sainte-Marie said of the song: 'I wrote 'Universal Soldier' in the basement of The Purple Onion coffee house in Toronto in the early sixties. It's about individual responsibility for war and how the old feudal thinking kills us all.'[citation needed]
Composition[edit]
In the six verses of the song, a soldier of different heights, ages, religious and political backgrounds is depicted, fighting in different times, for different countries (starting with Canada, where Buffy Sainte-Marie comes from), and with different motives, always thinking that he is fighting for peace but never realizing he is part of the problem. The song ends with:
He's the Universal Soldier
and he really is to blame.
His orders come from far away no more.
They come from here and there and you and me,
and brothers, can't you see
this is not the way to put an end to war.[1]
Sainte-Marie sold the publishing rights to the song, but later bought them back for $25,000.[2]

The Universal Soldier EP track listing | |
|
By 1965 the song had caught the attention of budding folk singer Donovan, who recorded it using a similar arrangement to Buffy Sainte-Marie's original recording.[1] In Donovan's version, Dachau became Liebau (Lubawka, Poland), a training center for Hitler Youth. Donovan's recording was released on an EP titled The Universal Soldier in the United Kingdom (15 August 1965, Pye NEP 24219). The EP continued Donovan's run of high charting releases in the UK by reaching #5 on the charts. Tracks on the EP: 'Universal Soldier'; 'The Ballad of a Crystal Man' b/w 'Do You Hear Me Now?' (Bert Jansch); 'The War Drags On' (Mick Softley).
The lack of interest in the EP format within the United States led Hickory Records to release the song as a single in September 1965 (Hickory 45-1338). Donovan's cover of 'Universal Soldier' was backed with another track from the British EP: Bert Jansch's 'Do You Hear Me Now?' Donovan's US release of 'Universal Soldier' also became a hit, charting higher than his previous single 'Colours' and ultimately reaching #53 on the Billboard charts. This success led Hickory Records to include the song on the United States release of Donovan's second album, Fairytale, replacing a cover of Bert Jansch's 'Oh Deed I Do'.
Sainte-Marie was glad that Donovan's success with this song got more people to hear it.[1]

Quoted unknowingly in Smithsonian article[edit]
Lyrics from this song (ending in 'without you all this killing can't go on') were quoted in Owen Edwards' article 'Kilroy Was Here' in the October 2004 edition of Smithsonian. The author identifies the lyrics as 'free verse' from 'a mysterious poem' that was found written on a cot from a Vietnam War era troopship. The true authorship of the words was provided by more than 285 readers who wrote in to provide a correction.[4]

Beat Cafe is Donovan's first record in nine years. His last, the Rick Rubin-produced Sutras was issued in 1993 and was hopelessly misunderstood -- especially coming as it did on the heels of Rubin's first collaboration with Johnny Cash. This side, produced by the rootsy yet eclectic John Chelew who has worked with everyone from Richard Thompson to the Blind Boys of Alabama and John Hiatt goes right to the heart of Donovan's particular musical esthetic. The title on this set is significant. The instrumentation is spare, with drums by Jim Keltner, acoustic , upright bass by the legendary Danny Thompson, and keyboards by Chelew.Donovan handled the guitar chores. In other words, small combo, cafe style. . . Atmosphere is everything in these songs; they are intimate, rhythm-conscious, tuneful, and lyrically savvy. In addition, they're inspired by that eternally present, romantically eulogized generation of poets, dope fiends, midnight travelers, and coffeehouse sages, the Beats. The set features 12 new songs; ten of them are Donovan Leitch originals. The covers include a compelling read of the mysterious and traditional 'The Cuckoo,'and a jazzy spoken word take on Dylan Thomas' 'Do Not Go Gentle.' There are some flashes of the hippy mystic of old here, but mostly, this is a fingerpopping set by Donovan the enigma as well as Donovan the songwriter. Chelew and band do a wonderful job of illustrating this juxtaposition. With this band tight, deeply in the groove at all times, the tunes open up and out as if the group were on the barroom stage, and extended the dancefloor jumping and jiving into the street on a delirious, humid moonlit night of uncontainable joy. 'Poorman's Sunshine,' with its skittering brushed snare drums and a B3 tracking the melody with Thompson's bass pushing the rhythm, jumps out at the listener, as does the title track with Thompson driving the whole engine. 'Yin My Yang' may have a seemingly ridiculous title, but it's not in the context of what this album tries to achieve. Donovan is celebrating the self-referential, 'anything-is-possible' revelation that fuelled the language and spirit of his heroes of yore, and propelled his own romantic, 'everything-is-love' aesthetic. The shimmering, dark, Eastern minor-key psychedelic spoken word/sung ditty of 'Two Lovers' is one of those poems that makes Donovan so unique (think, 'Atlantis' here). The organic jazzed-up funk of 'The Question' is one of those crazy moments that makes the whole world open and the body twitch in time. The album ends with the whispering 'Shambala,' a tender, blissful dirge that is utterly moving and hauntingly beautiful in its optimism and hope. If anything, if albums are 'needed' anymore, the spirit in this one is. Donovan reminds listeners that possibility and hope are not passé, but as full of chance and wild grace as ever. Welcome back, Donovan; you've been missed.
